Answer 1 :
If you aren't at least 20 (minimum age by state law to serve alcohol) reconsider your job search. If you don't have any experience (not a big deal) start with being a restaurant server and graduate to night clubs. The popular watering holes downtown tend to do pretty well. Richmond strip is another good area, start at one place and head west until you're hired.

About where can a 14 year old work in Houston/Tomball, Texas

Where can a 14 year old work in Houston/Tomball, Texas?
Does anyone know of any places?
Houston - 6 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Hmm... that's hard... I'm 14 also, and there aren't that many places to work at because of certain age limits at most places. (Most places require you to be at least 15 or 16 until you can start working) Maybe at an office (organizing papers, scanning items, etc.) or at animal shelters. My friend is planning to work at a local humane society where I live and their age requirement is 13 years. There are also one time events like helping out at festivals or gatherings that are also good jobs for teenagers.
Answer 2 :
No, legally it's not easy at 14. Try the usual pet sitting, plant care, lawn mowing, babysitting. Put flyers out in your neighborhood to neighbors you trust. You don't have alot of options 'til you're 16.
Answer 3 :
Chick fil A and also try your local delis and small business.
Answer 4 :
im 15 and i kno you wont like to mow lawns or anything i but try chick fa la..
Answer 5 :
My brother's 14, and in case you haven't noticed, people here are rich. Babysitting gets the best amount of money for the least effort. Petsitting also gets good money, but watching children usually gets the most.
Answer 6 :
chick-fil-a hires 14 and up

I have a few friends that worked for companies. That is the hardest working job for little pay.. thats why they always hiring, too much work...
Answer 2 :
You would do great but I would suggest that you try for FedEx first. FedEx company benefits include health and life insurance, disability insurance, 401(k), stock purchase plan, educational assistance and a large variety of additional employment benefits. You receive this even if you are part time. UPS provides an excellent employment opportunity for students. Through the UPS Earn & Learn program, our student employees receive all the paid benefits of a great part-time job with UPS, plus outstanding education assistance of up to $1,500 per semester / $3,000 per year with a maximum lifetime benefit of $15,000. This assistance can be used for tuition, books and fees as long as you are attending an approved college, university, trade or technical school. You will be eligible for the Earn & Learn program on your first day of work. Fed Ex have the better benefits and I beleive you should always work for a company that will give you more for doing the same thing.

Talk to your counselor at school and just maybe he can tell more about jobs in your local neighborhood.. Start mowing yards you could make extra money there. Ge a job delivering the paper with the Houston Chronicle. These are suggestions and I hope and pray that you find what you need, to grow and get an education. Pray about it. Mary
Answer 2 :
I don't know of any places that hire 15 year olds, but you can make yourself some money,, You can buy a cheap push lawn mower and a gas powered weed eater and start your own bizz. You can knock on peoples doors and tell them you are trying to raise money for your grandmothers operation... that way people will feel sorry for you,, and you will make some good tax free money.

About I'm 17 years old high school graduate looking for work in Houston

I'm 17 years old high school graduate looking for work in Houston?
I graduated high school early (I have my diploma) But I'm not starting college until I have enough money saved up. I need ideas on where to look, I've applied at Starbucks, toys r us, and the grocery stores but have not heard back from any of them. Does anyone know of stores that hire at 17 or anyone with a high school diploma? I live in Houston Texas, if that helps at all... but for now... I'll keep looking!
Houston - 4 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
I'd go everywhere! Retail places aren't hiring now. Get a greensheet and see what job listings they have. Get a JobsHouston magazine and start applying. Have you gone to temp agencies? There are plenty of jobs out there- you're just looking in the wrong places. I'd strongly recommend not delaying your education. Start at a junior college- like San Jac. You should qualify for financial aid, which will pay all your tuition.
Answer 2 :
Any restaurant will hire you, you won't get rich at it but it's honest. Any income beats no income. Turnover is high at food places so you'll stand a good chance at being hired right away. It's not glamorous and at times it can really suck, but being fresh out of high school it's where lots of students and aspiring students get their start. Many listings you'll see in the GreenSheet can be deceptive, beware of big print ads promising cash bonuses or unrealistic income promises, these are usually telemarketing boiler room operations which are notorious for NOT paying their employees. Don't let money stop you from getting an education. Apply for loans, grants, scholarships, or work-study programs. Talk to a financial aid counselor at the community college. You really don't want to get caught in the minimum wage trap, so make a plan for your future and stick to it. Even if you don't declare a major right away at least work on your academics. Good luck.
Answer 3 :
what about Whole Foods? the cashiers there make $10/hour which is quite a lot there are 5 in or around Houston pay/hour: http://www.glassdoor.com/Hourly-Pay/Whole-Foods-Hourly-Pay-E422.htm there are also several stores hiring at the houston galleria mall. http://www.simon.com/mall/malljobs.aspx?id=805
Answer 4 :
Thats good you are the right age. there are a lot of kids trying to find a job like you, best thing to do is go out and apply yourself. here is something that will get you started copy paste http://recessionrecover.blogspot.com/ it will help you make a little extra money, also will tell you what to do. so I hope this will help and good luck.

I really need some extra cash and I was just wondering what the age limit is because I'm 14 going to be 15 in October and well Thinking about working anywhere except fast food places and restaurants during the summer because I have nothing to do and the extra cash will be great :) Thanks

Answer 1 :
Mcdonalds or KFC
Answer 2 :
Depends on where you work it's usually 16 though
Answer 3 :
16, however you can do side jobs to earn some more money. For example, mowing the grass. Along those lines.
Answer 4 :
i think 15 but most likely 16 and even then you can only work a certain amount of hours. so you wont make much money but you will make some
Answer 5 :
I don't know about TX, but in Fla it's 14 to bag groceries and 16 for fastfood. You can always babysit or mow peoples lawn, you'll make extra cash w/out getting taxed.
Answer 6 :
I am 14 turning 15 in September and as far as I know it all depends on where you are planning on working. Normally it would be about 16 but some places hire at 14 (Taco Bell, Dairy Queen, Ect.) But most places like major restuarnt chains (Chili's, Denny's, Ect.) hire at 16.
Answer 7 :
According to the Texas Statutes of Labor Codes, Title 2, Chapter 51.011, 14 is the minimum age. I know this is probably more information than you want, but when it comes to the law, there is never enough information, so here is the exact statue. § 51.011. MINIMUM AGE. Except as provided by this chapter, a person commits an offense if the person employs a child under 14 years of age. Acts 1993, 73rd Leg., ch. 269, § 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1993. § 51.012. PERFORMER EXEMPTION. The commission by rule may authorize the employment of children under 14 years of age as performers in a motion picture or a theatrical, radio, or television production. Acts 1993, 73rd Leg., ch. 269, § 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1993. § 51.013. HOURS OF EMPLOYMENT; HARDSHIP EXEMPTION. (a) A person commits an offense if the person permits a child who is 14 or 15 years of age and who is employed by the person to work more than: (1) eight hours in one day; or (2) 48 hours in one week. (b) A person commits an offense if the person permits a child who is 14 or 15 years of age, is employed by the person, and is enrolled in a term of a public or private school to work: (1) between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. on a day that is followed by a school day; or (2) between the hours of midnight and 5 a.m. on a day that is not followed by a school day. (c) A person commits an offense if the person permits a child who is 14 or 15 years of age, is employed by the person, and is not enrolled in summer school to work between the hours of midnight and 5 a.m. on any day during the time that school is recessed for the summer. (d) The commission may adopt rules for determining whether hardships exist. If, on the application of a child, the commission determines that a hardship exists for that child, this section does not apply to that child. Acts 1993, 73rd Leg., ch. 269, § 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1993. § 51.014. HAZARDOUS OCCUPATIONS. (a) The commission by rule shall declare an occupation to be hazardous if: (1) the occupation has been declared to be hazardous by an agency of the federal government; and (2) the commission determines that the occupation is particularly hazardous for the employment of children. (b) The commission by rule may restrict the employment of children 14 years of age or older in hazardous occupations. (c) A person commits an offense if the person employs a child in violation of a rule adopted under this section. (d) In addition to any occupation determined to be hazardous under Subsection (a), the employment of a child to sell items or services for or solicit donations for any person other than an exempt organization or a business owned or operated by a parent, conservator, guardian, or other person who has possession of the child under a court order is a hazardous occupation for purposes of this chapter if the child is: (1) younger than 14 years of age; and (2) unaccompanied by a parent, conservator, guardian, or other person who has possession of the child under a court order. (e) For purposes of this section, "exempt organization" means: (1) a charitable organization, as that term is defined under Section 84.003, Civil Practice and Remedies Code; (2) an organization regulated under Title 15, Election Code; or (3) a club, organization, or other group engaged in a fund-raising activity for the club, organization, or group if the activity is sponsored by a public or private primary or secondary school. (f) Subsection (d) does not apply to a child younger than 14 years of age selling items or services as a self-employed person with the consent of a parent. Acts 1993, 73rd Leg., ch. 269, § 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1993. Amended by Acts 1995, 74th Leg., ch. 501, § 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1995. § 51.0145. USE OF CHILD FOR SALES AND SOLICITATION. (a) For purposes of this section: (1) "Exempt organization" means: (A) a charitable organization, as defined by Section 84.003, Civil Practice and Remedies Code; (B) an organization regulated under Title 15, Election Code; or (C) a club, organization, or other group engaged in a fund-raising activity for the club, organization, or group if the activity is sponsored by a public or private primary or secondary school. (2) "Solicit" means an action of a person to: (A) sell goods or services in a setting other than a retail establishment; (B) request donations; or (C) distribute items, information, or advertising. (b) The employment of a child to solicit is a hazardous occupation for purposes of this chapter. (c) A person may not employ a child to solicit unless the person: (1) at least seven days before the date the child begins employment, obtains on a form approved by the commission the signed consent of a parent of the child or of a conservator, guardian, or other person who has possession of the child under a court order; (2) provides to the individual who gives consent: (A) a map of the route the child will follow during each solicitation trip; and (B) the name of each individual who will be supervising each solicitation trip; (3) provides at each location where children will be engaged to solicit at least one adult supervisor for every three children engaged in that solicitation trip; and (4) limits each solicitation trip to: (A) no later than 7 p.m. on a day when the child is legally required to attend school; and (B) the hours between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. on all other days. (d) The commission may make additional requirements by rule for a person employing a child under this section to protect the safety, health, or well-being of the child. (e) This section does not apply to an exempt organization or a business owned or operated by a parent, conservator, guardian, or other person who has possession of the child under a court order. (f) A person commits an offense if the person employs a child in violation of this section or a rule adopted under this section. Added by Acts 1999, 76th Leg., ch. 648, § 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1999.

About nice area to live in Houston? work in Houston downtown

Nice area to live in Houston? work in Houston downtown.?
I will move to houston soon to start a job in Downtown Houston. Since I do not know much about the city, I wonder what would be a nice area to live. We are a young couple with a one-and-a-half year old son. So ideally, we would like to live close to areas for children's activities. A less-than-one-hour commute would be great. Thank you very much for your answer!

Email me and I will send you the email address of a realtor I know that is very good, very helpful.
Answer 2 :
The NW area of houston is a nice area. Hwy 290 and 1960 intersection or near there. The Cy-Fair ISD is a pretty decent school district as well. Hwy 6 and West Road. Copperfield, Aberdeen Green, Aberdeen Trails.
Answer 3 :
The closer in to downtown that you live, the more demand there is for the property and the higher the prices are. If money isn't a problem, West University is a great area for families with children. Most of us commoners need to live in suburbia and commute. If that's your case, check out Sugar Land, Greatwood, Katy (great schools), and pray for cheaper gas prices!
Answer 4 :
sugar land is a very nice area of houston
Answer 5 :
The Spring area is a good place to start, and Spring Independent school district is good also. I lived there for 18 years, born and raised my daughter and she absolutely loved it and was very sad when we moved. Spring, Kingwood or The Woodlands are GREAT places to live because you can take the toll road into work. Me and my husband both worked downtown so it worked out really good. Hope you enjoy the city.
Answer 6 :
north on 290 past Jones Rd. towards Hockley and Waller is a subdivision called Fairfield, it is out of town but still close to Houston and really nice.
Answer 7 :
I live in Houston with my boyfriend. We're a young couple in our mid 20's and are currenty researching different Houston areas for our first home. If money isn't an issue, then consider the Heights. It is a GREAT neighborhood just a few miles outside of downtown. The neighborhood is booming with new home construction. And the heart of the Heights has beautiful homes that date back to the 19th century. Homes can get pricey but it is well worth it. My boyfriend works downtown and we live on the edge of the Heights. We live in an apt now, but we love the area because of it's central location. It's close to everything! Another great area to live is the Pearland or Sugarland area. It is about 15 miles south of downtown Houston but the commute isn't very pretty. Lately the real estate market has been on the rise in that area. Lots of Houstonians trying to get out of the city but still want to live close enough to work in the city. You can get a very nice brand new home there within the 150-200k range. The school district is top rated and there's PLENTY of GREAT eating and shopping! If you'd like to know anything else about Houston, feel free to contact me. Good luck with your home search and welcome to Houston!

Answer 2 :
I don't know in Houston, but try: Fast Food Restaurant Movie Theater Grocery Store Movie Place (Blockbuster/Hollywood Video)
Answer 3 :
Go to the local job center they can help you
Answer 4 :
Stay in your community. Find one of your local community advertisers and pick one of the small businesses that advertise within. Go to them and see if they need help. Also find a company that is service based so you can learn a trade. Meaning, work for a pool cleaner, landscaper, etc. When you get to college you can buy your own equipment and make some money doing the same trade, and be your own boss. Also, keep in mind you must drive to work, so keep your travel expenses down. I played a game with myself at this age. I tripled my travel to work expenses (in theory) and when I got paid I put the difference in a savings account. Over time you get so use to doing this you save a good amount of money. Also do not spend your first two checks. This will always keep you with a little money in your pocket. And get busy with activities. I got so busy I made the mistake of not cashing checks in time. Be it they were only $75 and $80 back in 1990, but I did not know, at the time, checks had a life-span. Just some extra advice. Good luck

Answer 3 :
You are a mean and bitter old lady. You should do the work for him. A 13 year old who does not want to be there is way more trouble than he's worth. Don't do anyone any favors. Ask yourself what is the message you are trying to convey? Your child will learn to help begrudgingly and only when forced. Charity must originate from within and be done with a glad heart. You have guilt issues of your own which must be dealt with. Let your child play ball.

that isn't going to work. try taking her junk away. Besides if she hasn't learned by now, perhaps its YOU who needs a rude awakening. You made her this way!
Answer 9 :
i volunteer at a hospital. i suggest going to your local hospital
Answer 10 :
Contact your local Red Cross, they are always looking for volunteers! Congratulations on a Brilliant Idea! Where my kids go to school, they have to fulfill 40 hours a school year of community service, or they don't pass. I think all schools should offer that.
Answer 11 :
SPCA??? im not to sure..he might be a bit young.I know at the auckland spca if there under 14 i think they need to be under parental supervision.hey it would be a bit of fun for you!

Answer 13 :
wont teach him nothing as the child will still come home to his meteriral poessions. you need to take away all the stuff he or she holds dear. then make them earn them by doing chores around the house.
Answer 14 :
find your city newspaper and in there should be a section once a week that will ask for volunteers or ask for people needing help. Or go to a university or her school, they have a wonderful collection of stuff for students. also go to the city's website I have posted.
Answer 15 :
I work at MDAnderson Cancer Center as a volunteer every summer. Just once a week for 4 hours is the minumum. I racked up about 50 or 60 hrs that I can brag about AND put on my college resume. I got to see patients in the hospital and it really opened my eyes to the real world. Volunteers can work with full contact with the patients, or just some, or none. I worked at a popcorn machine in the hospital one year and I got to serve popcorn to the people who work there, patients, and anybody else in the building. It was a great experience. Hope this helps!!! : )
Answer 16 :
Almost all churches would be grateful for the help, and your kid just might learn a thing or two about true appreciation while there.
Answer 17 :
TRY LOOKING IN THE HOSPITALS, THEY TAKE VOLUNTEER WORKERS.
Answer 18 :
volunteermatch.com
Answer 19 :
Homeless shelters, geriatric & cancer wards at a hospital, retirement homes, animal shelters - the possibilities are endless. You could also stop giving them everything and make them earn it.
Answer 20 :
I lived in Houston for over 30 years. I just looked for the poorest elementary school in my area (Cunningham Elementary) and volunteered twice a week with children who were not up to grade level in any subject ....but didn't qualify for special education. Those were two of the best years I ever spent. There were only 8 children age 8-11 in the class. The teacher did most of the teaching and I spent my time enriching their lives such as making quilts (individually and then I put the backing, etc. on), learning to hem jeans, etc. for the girls, making Pueblo housing with all of them in geography. Literally I fell in love with these children. If you, as a mom, do this for punishment to your daughter, what good does it do. You should be the example of gratitude, love for mankind, and your own charitable work where you could easily find charitable ways for her to participate in the greatest joy in life .....and that is SERVING AND GIVING.....
Answer 21 :
My mom is making me voulenteer at my church. I think that it has helped. But now she wants me to voulenteer at an animal shelter. And now either of those work. I am not saying it may help your son/daughter but my mom said it worked for ME.
Answer 22 :
I would take him to a rehabilitation hospital that caters to children & teenagers. Have him see how kids live who have been burned, paralyzed or have cancer. It will change him forever. Have him do service hours there or at a Ronald McDonald House. I am a Girl Scout leader and my troop puts in many community service hours each year. The most appreciative are the elderly. Their faces just light up when we come play board games, sing or do arts & crafts with them.
Answer 23 :
Any right-to-life organization
Answer 24 :
I signed mine up at the Senior Citizens Center in our town. She got to eat lunch with them and then bring around the trays. She helped cut up their food if they needed it. She wiped the tables and put away the chairs. She helped with the bingo games and basically she did anything else they needed. She didn't want to do it at first and I told her if she did it the first week and didn't like it, she didn't have to do it anymore. She LOVED it. So much she got herself up everyday after the first week, got dressed and walked down the 2 blocks to the center. They loved her. :)
Answer 25 :
I'm not sure if they have one where you live, and i live in England so i wouldn't know, but are there any youth forums? or youth councils? :/.
Answer 26 :
Homeless Shelters always need help with maintenance, serving food at meal times and janitorial
Answer 27 :
Hello, Boy that is a hard one to anwser but I think that it might be a good wake up call if he volunteered at a retirement home. Basically, you go to the courthouse, and fill out the forms they will give you. There are people there who can answer questions, but the forms are actually pretty simple. It is designed to work without lawyers, so you are not expected to state things in great detail or in legal language. You just need to explain briefly and clearly why you are suing. "John Jones agreed to pay me $1,000 to repair his garage. I finished the work in July 2010, and I have still not been paid." If you have any evidence on paper, like a contract, a cancelled check, photos, etc., have *copies* made. Your claim should be for the cost of the work/contract, PLUS the cost of filing the lawsuit, plus any expenses, such as for copying. If you win the case, the judge will order the other person to pay. If he doesn't do that, you can have the sheriff seize his assets and auction them off, assuming he has any. All too often, people don't pay what they owe because they have no money to pay with. But if he has a car or other easily sellable asset, that can be seized. If he has real estate, you can put a lien on the property. And yes, having a judgment recorded against him will damage his credit history badly, at least if it doesn't get paid right away.

I would suggest the Parks & Recreation department, or possibly the Zoo
Answer 2 :
Check with the Houston Arboretum. It's AwEsOmE!!! If you don't do it there, they will have ideas for you. The people are so nice and helpful there.
Answer 3 :
Hermann Park has a Conservation Society, they definitely do conservation work around Houston. You can also try Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept, and as the previous poster said, the Arboretum. The staff there are very helpful.
